Jamie Murray and John Peers had reached their second Grand Slam final of the season, and the second in a row. Their opponents were the French team of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who were the 12th seeds. The French team were playing in their first Slam final, the eighth seeds had been in this position before.

Both teams had played amazing tennis to reach in the final, with the higher seeds falling earlier in the tournament it meant that the US Open doubles final would have a brand new winner with the French side taking it.

Late break gives opening set to the French side

In the first set, both sides were serving well. The first serve percentage was equal at 67 percent of first serves landing in, with 80 percent of points won on that first serve. Murray was serving better of the eighth seeds and played some amazing points at the net, keeping the set level. Murray and Peers managed to create five break points on the French team's serve, but they were unable to covert any as the 12th seeds saved them with astonishing points. Herbert and Mahut also created five break points on the eighth seeds serve, and they converted the only vital point to take the first set 6-4 as they broke the team of Murray and Peers, with Peers serving, to take the set. The French team were targeting Peers more and more at the net as he appeared to be the weaker of the higher seeds at the net.

Tight second set

The second set saw both teams still serving well as the first serve percentages increased on both sides of the net. Murray and Peers landed 72 percent of first serves in with 62 percent of those points won. Mahut and Herbert landed 78 percent of first serves in and won 94 percent of points behind the serve.

The French team still targeted the Australian Peers with their shots, attempting to create break points on the Australian's serve. Peers stayed strong though and managed to save the only one on his serve. At the net, Murray was showing that he was the better of the eighth seeds still in this part of the game. The Brit/Australian were unable to create any break points on the French serve as Mahut served superbly to hold each service game comfortably.

The final game

With the score poised at 5-4 in favour of the 12th seeds, the eighth seeds came out to serve to stay in the match. Nerves started to show as the Brit/Australian pair found themselves match points down.

The score was 15-40 but the eighth seeds saved the first match point. They were unable to save the second however and the 12th seeds fell to the floor in celebration. Mahut and Herbert had won their first ever Grand Slam title, whilst Murray and Peers found themselves holding the runner up trophy for the second time.
