Seven of the world’s top 10 players in the WTA will be headed to Stuttgart in 2016 to play in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, Garbiñe Muguruza, Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, and Lucie Safarova have all confirmed their entry into the WTA Premier event. The winner of the tournament will get 470 points towards their ranking, prize money, and a Porsche 911 Carrera sports car.
Defending Champion Kerber Returns
It was a memorable trip back to Germany for Angelique Kerber this year. The German, who was unseeded for this tournament, went on a stunning run en route to the title. In her second round match, she defeated three-time defending champion Maria Sharapova in three sets then followed that up with a victory over sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova in the quarterfinals. After making light work of Madison Brengle in the semis, she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in three sets to win the title.
Three Of The World’s Top Four Come Along As Well
Sharapova returns to Stuttgart to try and reclaim her crown. The world number four won three consecutive titles from 2012-14 before Kerber ended her reign this year. World number two Halep looks to go a couple better next year in Germany. The Romanian made the semifinals but lost to Wozniacki in three sets. Muguruza, the world number three, lost in the second round at the Grand Prix to Halep.
This Year’s WTA Finalist Join The Fray
Kvitova, a Fed Cup champion and WTA Finals finalist, will also be headed back to Stuttgart. The Czech number one was seeded third at the tournament but was upset in her opening match against the American Madison Brengle. Radwanska, the WTA Finals champion, fared one worse than Kvitova. She wound up losing to Sara Errani in her opening round match. The tournament is set to begin on April 18.
