The prestigious end of the year event to celebrate British Sporting Achivement was held in Belfast. With a sell out crowd, the 12 contenders for the individual award were introduced throughout the night with Andy Murray being left until last. Each contender was showcased with a short film of their achivements in the year. In between other awards were given, all had been selected by a panel including the Helen Rollason award. This award is given "for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity", and the winner is selected by BBC Sport. The 2015 Helen Rollason award went to eight-year-old Bailey Matthews. 8-year-old Bailey, who has cerebral palsy, completed his first triathlon earlier in the year, throwing away his walking frame to complete the last 20 yards of the final running event on his own.

The early betting odds had Murray ahead in the unofficial poll to win the very top award again. The British number 1 had scooped the award in 2013 after ending the 77 year wait for a British male Wimbledon Champion, and had finished in 3rd place in 2012. Murray is the first tennis player to win the award twice. The feeling amongst tennis fans was that the Davis Cup team should be crowned as Team of the year. It appeared that Murray may have known this was certainly going to happen, as the two previous occasions where the Brit had been nominated, he had been at his training camp in Florida, however this year Murray changed his training base to Dubai (where he took part in the IPTL after Novak Djokovic had withdrawn, Murray had already stated if were any matches in Dubai he would play them, for the Singapore Slammers). Others from the Davis Cup team were also in Dubai with Murray and they all flew over on the day of the show to be there in person.

Leon Smith had been nominated for Coach of the Year meaning it could have been a clean sweep for the Davis Cup team. This award was third last to be awarded, and it did not go to Smith, but went to Michael O'Neill who coached the Northern Irish football (soccer) team to qualify for the European Championships (Euro 2016) and finish top of their group. Smith could easily have taken this award but the football manager (and there were quite a few football managers nominated) took this award.

This led onto the penultimate award, which was Team of the Year, this was the second award voted for by the panel, the Davis Cup team were amongst the nominations, which included womens football and hockey teams, alongside cricket, and male football teams. After ending the 79 year wait for one of the inagural nations of the Davis Cup to win the trophy again the British Davis Cup team scooped this award. Smith gave a speech in which he thanked the players, the media, the BBC especially for covering all the ties this year and the fans who had travelled following the team around for years. The entire team were on the stage - Andy Murray, James Ward, Jamie Murray, Dom Inglot, Dan Evans, Kyle Edmunds and the backroom staff stood together to the applause and cheers of the assembled sports stars and members of the public who had tickets.

Voting for the top award, the Sports Personality of the Year award is open to the public to vote and via telephone. No one would know who the winner was until it was announced, the voting closes and then the numbers are independantly verified before the top three are announced. The third place winner was announced first and this was won by Jessica Ennis-Hill, another top three finish for the British Heptathlete. The runner up was Kevin Sinfield, a Rugby League player who just retired from the sport at the end of the most sucessful year for his club. This was the first year a Rugby League player had ever been nominated. The top award went to Murray who polled over 35% of the total votes, making this the second time he had picked up the honour in three years. Murray was able to show his sense of humour (which many people don't believe he has) when in his acceptance speech, he stated that a friend had messaged him with a link to an article that stated "Andy Murray is as dull as a weekend in Worthing. I think that's a bit harsh. On Worthing."
