This is the second consecutive year that the 37-year-old German will miss the first Grand Slam of the season. Last year, Haas had withdrawn from the Australian Open due to his ongoing recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. The German, ranked 372 in the world, was set to play in the slam’s main draw due to his protected ranking.

This will be the sixth time Haas will miss the first slam of the season. He has reached the semifinals of the tournament three times (1999, 2002, 2007) in his career.

Georgian Nikoloz Baslashvili, ranked 113 in the world, will take his place in the main draw.

Tipsarevic Withdraws From Sydney And The Australian Open

Hours before Haas’ announcement, Janko Tipsarevic pulled out from both Sydney and the Australian Open citing right knee patella tendonitis. The Serbian had a protected ranking that would have allowed him to play directly into the main draw.

#Tipsarevic has withdrawn from the #AusOpen with continuing foot injury, moving Jaziri into the main draw.

Tipsarevic, who’s a former world number eight, has dropped to 410 in the rankings due to lack of playing time- he missed the 2014 season after undergoing foot surgery. The 31-year-old Serbian has only played 13 competitive single matches last season after returning from surgery.

“Dear all… I’m sorry to inform you that after a lot of testing I was diagnosed with a right knee patella tendonitis. [Although definitely healable], it’s a persistent and serious condition. Therefore, I will have to pull out from the 2016 AOpen,” Tipsarevic said on Instagram, “Thank you for your understanding and support. I really do need it now more than ever.”

In his last appearance at the slam in 2013, Tipsarevic reached the fourth round, his best ever result at the Australian Open. Tunisian Malek Jaziri, who is ranked 103 in the world, will take his place in the draw.
