Second Seeds Continue Hot Streak in Rio

Juan-Sebastien Cabal and Robert Farah have carried their form from Buenos Aires into Rio de Janeiro this week. The second seeds in Rio had no problems dispatching Marcus Daniell and Artam Sitak in opening round play on Wednesday. Cabal-Farah dominated from start to finish in the 6-2, 6-2. The Argentina Open champions were splendid with their first serves in this one, winning 24 of 26 points in the match. They also forced Daniell-Sitak to face 11 break points, cashing in on four of them.

In other men's doubles action on Wednesday, Federico Delbonis and Paolo Lorenzi teamed up to down Andre Sa and Maximo Gonzalez in straight sets. In the 6-4, 6-4 victory, Delbonis and Lorenzi won just six more points for the match than Sa-Gonzalez. The difference came down to their ability to break as they converted four of eight chances, while saving five of seven on their own serves. Other results saw qualifiers David Marrero and Pablo Carreno Busta upset Alexander Peya and Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. while fourth seeds Nicholas Monroe and Jack Sock were forced to retire when leading Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 3-0. That was due to a back injury suffered by Sock.

Paes Breaks Losing Skid in Win Over Fourth Seeds in Delray Beach

Leander Paes had not won a doubles match since the opening tournament of the season in Chennai. That streak is over. On Wednesday, Paes and partner Jeremy Chardy upset fourth seeded Eric Butorak and Scott Lipsky 6-4, 7-5 in opening round action at the Delray Beach Open. Paes-Chardy were broken twice, but generally had their service games working well as they won 72 percent of their service points. They broke Butorac-Lipsky four times and rallied in both sets to come back from one break deficits.

In other action, third seeds Max Mirnyi and Treat Huey edged Memphis Open champions Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Santiago Gonzalez 6-3, 7-6 (5). Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin became the first tandem to secure a quarterfinal spot this week. Marach-Martin took care of Donald Young and Denis Kudla in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Elsewhere, Chris Guccione and Bernard Tomic survived a game effort from substitute team Sander Groen and Adelchi Virgili 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The Bryan Brothers ended the night with a win.
