Katie Swan is aiming to earn a wildcard into this year’s Wimbledon after a promising start to her 2016 season.
The rising star became the youngest British player to play in the Fed Cup earlier this month at just 16 years of age, breaking the record previously held by Anne Keothavong.
Swan's Impressive Fed Cup Debut
Swan certainly impressed on debut, defeating fellow youngster Ilze Hattingh of South Africa in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
The world number 512 then scored an even bigger victory after dismissing Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia 6-3, 6-3.
The challenge of taking on Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium in the promotional playoff was a step too far, but the Brit more than held her own, taking a set off of the world number 166, losing 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.
Currently ranked at world number 12 in the juniors, Swan hopes to improve on this over the course of the season, looking to build on her appearance in the 2015 Australian Open junior final.
On that occasion at the age of 15 Swan lost to Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalikova 6-1, 6-4.
With this clear goal and desire to improve, the 16-year-old looks to the summers grass court season and a chance to play on home soil.
The Brit is hoping to play in some of this summers events by earning a wildcard, whether that be automatic entry in to the qualifying or the main draw.
Swan said to the BBC Sport, “There's a chance I might get a Wimbledon main draw wildcard, but I'm not sure about that yet. Definitely I'll keep working towards that and it'll be amazing if I can make my Grand Slam debut this year."
It promises to be an exciting year in prospect for the British youngster, the only way is up for her.
