Naomi Broady upset Monica Puig 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Rogers Cup. The Brit won 17 of the final 22 points to seal the win and move on to round two.

Puig steady in taking the first set

Puig has adapted her game to all surfaces and she showed it off by breaking Broady to open the match. The Brit has a big game and she broke back in a marathon 12-point game, taking it on her second chance to level the set at 2-2. Puig is a terrific mover with excellent defensive skills and she broke Broady again in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. She concluded the set the same way she opened it; with a break in another long game, 10 points to take the set 6-3.

Broady takes 57-minute second set to level the match

Long games were the order of the set, Broady breaking in a 10 point game to open the set. Puig broke back to 15 and had five deuces in the Brit's next service game, Broady doing well to hold on. Breaks were then traded, Broady needing 10 points, Puig 12 and the result was a level set at 3-3. Things settled down for a bit until Broady struck the decisive blow, breaking Puig in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead. She served the set out to 15, winning it 6-4 to square the match at one set all.

Broady then closed with a rush, breaking Puig in the fifth and seventh games to take a 5-2 lead, winning 12 of the 14 points. Now serving for the match, Puig saved one match point, but not a second as the Brit closed out the set 6-2 and completed the upset. By the numbers

Broady hit 9 aces as compared to Puig's 2 and survived 17 double faults. Broady went 6/9 on break points and only got 47 percent of her first serves in (47 of 101), but won 68 percent of those points (32 of 47). She was also particularly effective on second serve return points won, taking 59 percent (27 of 46), exposing the weakest point of Puig's game as the Puerto Rican doesn't have a big serve.
