Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has had an inconsistent WTA campaign in 2016 but she will be looking to build some momentum heading into the Rio Olympics and the US Open.

Andrea Petkovic hasn't had a good year either and her ranking has slumped to number 41 in the world after failing to defend points that she picked up last year.

Kvitova has split from her longtime coach David Kotyza this year and the results have not been what she has expected.

The German is also looking for some form as she will be one of the four German players representing her country at the Rio Olympics hoping to take home a medal.

How they got here

Kvitova opened her campaign at the Coupe Rogers on Monday against Polish qualifier Magda Linette and the current world number 13 registered an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Petkovic defeated erratic Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-6, 6-3 to set up this intriguing second round match with the 12th-seeded Czech.

Kvitova's summer so far

The 2012 Coupe Rogers champion hasn't had the best of summers coming into this tournament.  Her grass court campaign was underwhelming as she lost in the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham to Jelena Ostapenko.

Another brief tournament on the Britsh lawns occurred at the Aegon International for the Czech as she lost to Britain's Johanna Konta in three sets and a shocking second round exit at Wimbledon to Ekaterina Makarova was certainly not what she had planned.

Petkovic's summer so far

The German hasn't had plenty to smile about in 2016 but Petkovic is still a dangerous player no matter where she falls in the draw.

At the Aegon Classic, she lost to clay court specialist Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets despite taking the first set but the match was interrupted by rain delays which affected the momentum of the match.

Petkovic suffered her first defeat to Ekaterina Makarova in the third round in Eastbourne and like Kvitova her tournament at Wimbledon ended in the second round and it was to Makarova's doubles partner Elena Vesnina who went on to reach the semifinals.

Breakdown of their rivalry

Kvitova and Petkovic are no stranger to each other as the duo have faced off eight times in their careers and have an even head-to-head at 4-4.

Kvitova leads their head-to-head 4-2 on hard courts, Petkovic leads 1-0 on clay and 1-0 on grass.

The two-time Grand Slam winner was victorious in their first two meetings in straight sets in Linz in 2009 and in a Fed Cup tie in 2010.

Petkovic won their next two meetings in 2010 in straight sets on the clay courts of Rome and on the grass in s-Hertogenbosch.

They met in their only final at the Brisbane International in 2011 which Kvitova won 6-1, 6-3 and they have played at the Coupe Rogers before but it was in 2011 in Toronto, which Petkovic was victorious however the Czech got her revenge a week later in Cincinnati.

Kvitova won their most recent meeting in the final of the Fed Cup in 2014 and the Czechs went on to win the competition again.

Who wins?

Interestingly all of their eight previous meetings have ended in straight sets, so whoever takes the initiative in the first set tonight will most likely go on to win the match in straight sets.

Kvitova enjoys playing at the Coupe Rogers as she was a champion in 2012 and made the quarterfinals the following year.

Petkovic is a fabulous returner and Kvitova's lefty serve is usually tough to predict but the German has worked out a way to beat her previously.

The Czech will not want to endure a long physical battle as she suffers from mononucleosis and asthma. The crowds at the Coupe Rogers will be emotionally invested in this affair as both players are popular on the tour amongst their colleagues.

This match is scheduled to take place not before 6:30pm on the Banque Nationale court and the winner of this match will face ninth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova or Russian qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva in the third round.

Prediction:  Kvitova in straight sets.
