With the buzz from the U.S. Open finally beginning to wind down, the ITF Pro Circuit generated some buzz of its own with another action-packed week of tennis. From Toronto to Zhuhai, there always seemed to be live tennis in progress regardless of the time, and remarkably, the quality never suffered.

At the end of the week, it was Slovak teenager and eighth seed Rebecca Sramkova who took home the biggest title of the week across both the men's and women's calendar: the $100,000 crown in Biarritz, France. Elsewhere, veteran Olga Govortsova, Belgian youngster Elise Mertens and Canada’s Filip Peliwo were among the high-profile names to get another much-needed title under their belts.

Sizzling Sramkova Powers to Three-Set Victory in $100K Final; Govortsova, Mertens Secure $50K Championships

In the biggest story of the weekend, it was Slovakian teenager Rebecca Sramkova who powered her way to victory after a stellar week in the French city of Biarritz. After looking impressive all week, the Slovak powered her way to victory once more, overcoming a late second-set letdown to defeat Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Thousands upon thousands of kilometres away, unseeded Belarusian Olga Govortsova needed just 66 minutes to come away with the $50,000 title in Zhuhai with a shutout 6-1, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Ipek Soylu. After a dismal last twelve months for the Belarusian, this victory will certainly come in handy as far as her confidence and ranking are concerned, having seen her ranking drop outside the world’s top 250 after the U.S. Open.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, top seed Elise Mertens proved just why she is one of the most underrated up-and-comers in the game today, clinching the $50,000 title over home favourite Melanie Oudin, who is attempting to make another comeback from illness; the Belgian grinding out a tough 6-4, 6-2 victory to secure her first title of the season.

But that wasn’t all... Along with the two $50,000 and lone $100,000 events, there was also four $25,000 finals being played this past weekend, all of which were won in straight sets; Kathinka von Deichmann, Irina Maria Bara, Anastasiya Komardina, and Viktoria Kuzmova adding another big tournament victory to their résumé as they continue to look for that major breakthrough at the WTA level.

Peliwo, Lokoli, Giustino the $25K Champions This Week

In comparison, there were only three big tournaments, ranking at the $25,000 level, balanced with nearly half a dozen $10,000 tournaments. Highlighting the bunch are Canada’s Filip Peliwo and France’s Laurent Lokoli, who both won on home soil, while Italy’s Lorenzo Giustino ground his way to his seventh career ITF singles title.

For Peliwo, his 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Rhyne Williams in Toronto, held at the same venue as the prestigious Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, means more than just winning on home soil. The 2013 Wimbledon and U.S. Open junior champion has admittedly struggled in his transition to the pro circuit in recent years, so this victory could not have possibly come at a better time for the Canadian youngster.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, it was Frenchman Laurent Lokoli who was victorious on home soil, coming from a set down to edge out American Raymond Sarmiento, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) in a two hour and 18-minute thriller. Though Sarmiento appeared to have claimed a decisive break at 5-all in the third, Lokoli remained calm and weathered the storm in his favour, making the most of his opportunities to force a final set tiebreak and never looking back from there.

Elsewhere, top-seeded Italian Lorenzo Giustino won a battle of the top two seeds in the showpiece of the $25,000 in Nice, fighting his way from behind to secure a mightily-impressive 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over second seed Kristijan Mesaros, with a lone break in the third ultimately proving the difference in a match that could have swung both ways.
