Leylah Fernandez was playing her first match at the US Open and was facing Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva. The first set started on serve until the fourth game of the set when Fernandez was able to get a few breakpoints but Zvonareva was able to save them. It stayed on serve until 5-4 when Zvonaerava was serving to stay in the set but Fernandez would earn two set points and would convert to take the first set 6-4.

The second set was much of the same as at the fifth game of the set at 3-2 once again Fernandez had breakpoints but Zvonareva would once again manage to save both to stay on serve. It continued on serve for much of the set until Zvonareva was serving to stay in the match at 5-6 and Fernandez managed to earn a couple of match points.

At 15-40 Zvonareva managed to save both and she would save one more before Fernandez earned a fourth match point and this time she would make no mistake sealing the victory 6-4, 7-6. It was quite impressive how this young 17 year old is making headlines and taking care of the opposition.

She will have a very tough second-round match as she will face the number two seed Sofia Kenin
