13th seed Frances Tiafoe has picked up another quality win as he defeated former world number one and three-time major champion Andy Murray 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open.

Tiafoe was broken just once in the one hour, 49 minute match as he defeated Murray for the first time in his career. The 13th seed advances to a third-round match against unseeded Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

Story of the match

Tiafoe put early pressure on the Murray serve, getting to deuce before the Brit eventually held. Not troubled on his own serve, the American swung freely and created a pair of break chances in the seventh game that Murray again saved.

The three-time major champion again was facing break point after a lovely backhand volley winner by Tiafoe, but he sent a forehand long and Murray eventually held and led 5-4. The 13th seed saved three break opportunities to level the set, which went to a tiebreaker.

The deciding point in the breaker was captured by Tiafoe as he stung a forehand for a winner to go in front 3-1. Holding two set points leading 6-4, the American delighted the crowd with a nifty pickup on the forehand side to take a one-set lead.

With another forehand winner, the 13th seed held two break chances in the fourth game of the second set and on the first, Murray netted a forehand to hand Tiafoe a 3-1 lead. He broke a second time to extend his advantage to 5-1.

Murray got one break back and held to cut the lead to 5-3, but Tiafoe closed out the match a game later when the Brit sent a backhand wide on match point.
