Caroline Wozniacki, 25, and former world number one has been selected by Denmark to hold the flag at the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio. 

Explaining its decision to award Wozniacki with this momentous occasion, the Danish committee said "she is one of the most successful tennis players of the past decade." 

"It was a dream come true." were the words of Wozniacki. This will be her first time as Denmark's flag bearer. The announcement was made via Wozniacki's Twitter page. 

In 2012, Denmark had chosen canoeist Wraae Kim Knudsen, who won a silver medal to hold the flag bearer at the Olympics. 

Caroline is the 25th Dane and only third woman ever to bear the flag at the Olympics. 

Denmark is only the third country to have announced a flag bearer at the Olympic Games. Before Majlinda Kelmendi a Judo player from Kosovo and Iranian Archery player Zahra Nemati were also confirmed. 

In the 2008 Olympics, Wozniacki reached the third round where she was defeated by Russia's Elena Dementieva 7-6(3), 6-2, and in 2012 the Dane lost out to Serena Williams 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinal stage.

At the start of the season, Wozniacki had set out to win her first Grand Slam and added that she hopes to win an Olympic medal. Caroline also wishes to keep improving her game, to keep fit and healthy and hopes to continue winning the big tournaments tennis has to offer. Wozniacki had come close to winning a grand slam, where she lost in straight sets at the 2009 and 2014 US Open final to Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams respectively. 

Wozniacki had also talked about how a good pre-season had helped her stay in good shape and at the top of her game. So far the 25-year old has posted a semifinal at the ASB Classic and suffered a shock first round defeat at the Australian Open.
