England 408-9 (50 overs) Buttler 129, Root 104, Rashid 69, Boult 4-55, beat New Zealand 198 (31.1 overs) Taylor 57, Finn 4-35, Rashid 4-55, by 210 runs.

After an abysmal showing at the 2015 World Cup, England put in a brilliant all-round performance to beat the Kiwis and make a huge statement with four games remaining in the series.

With incumbent head coach Trevor Bayliss yet to take full charge, Paul Farbrace continued his leadership of the side, as the team looks to make significant improvements to their one-day cricket.

After being inserted by Brendon McCullum, the 'new era' got off to the worst possible start as Jason Roy thrashed hard at a Trent Boult delivery, getting himself caught off the first ball of the match at backward point by Martin Guptill

Alex Hales followed Roy back to the dressing room after a run-a-ball 20, before captain Eoin Morgan and Joe Root put on 121 for the third wicket in under 16 overs.

Morgan fell to Mitchell McClenaghan for 50 off 46 balls, with Root falling just 10 balls later for a magnificent 104 off 78 balls in a partnership which gave England the perfect platform to build a substantial innings.

Ben Stokes (10) and debutant Sam Billings (3) then fell in quick succession as the good work achieved by the top order seemed to be undone as England fell to 202-6 with 20 overs remaining.

Those wickets brought Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid together, and the two of them managed to trump the earlier partnership of Root and Morgan, with the pair adding 177 in a world-record seventh wicket partnership in ODI cricket.

Buttler carried forward his from from Friday evening's T20 Roses encounter, slaughtering the Kiwi attack to all parts of Edgbaston in his innings of 129 from 77 balls, including 13 fours and five sixes.

Rashid's 69 was crucial, as he became the perfect caveat to Buttler's man-of-the-match innings, with the Yorkshire all-rounder hitting nine boundaries in his 50 ball knock.

After the pair fell, England's tail managed to get the side over 400 with Liam Plunkett providing a few lusty blows to lead England to their highest ever one-day score.

Chasing over 400, New Zealand's hopes were all but ended after the first over, after captain McCullum was bowled by Steven Finn for just 10.

England then continued to take wickets throughout the innings to dismiss New Zealand for 198 with only Ross Taylor (57) and Kane Williamson (45) offering any real resistance.

Finn picked up 4-35 from seven overs, knocking over three of the top four as he led the attack perfectly, not allowing the tourists to get away at any point in their pursuit on England's massive total.

The other star with the ball was Rashid, who completed his brilliant all-round performance, picking up 4-55 from his 10 overs, including the key wickets of Williamson and Luke Ronchi

Chris Jordan got in on the act, picking up the final wicket as McClenaghan slapped the ball straight down Hales' throat on the leg-side boundary to give England a 210-run victory.

It was England's largest ever margin of victory, and has set up the series perfectly, with the sides meeting again at The Oval on Friday.
