England's limited overs captain Eoin Morgan was left disappointed with their batting performance on Tuesday, despite the 15 run victory against World T20 minnows Afghanistan.
Fancied for a big score against the qualifiers, Morgan and his teammates failed to deliver, being restricted to 42-4, and then 85-7, at certain points.
They went down to 42-4, losing three wickets for no runs, after a good start from James Vince and Joe Root took them to 42-1 from just five overs. However, a collapse followed, Morgan part of it himself as he was bowled for a golden duck.
England "didn't adapt" says Morgan
Asked to explain the woeful batting, the captain stated that he thought England "didn't really adapt to the surface", despite having "spoken about how we would have to" beforehand. There's clearly work to be done going into the final group game against Sri Lanka, Morgan assuring the fans that "we'll [England] speak about it in the coming days".
Willey and Moeen saved the giants
David Willey and Moeen Ali, considered more a part of the bowling attack than batting, scraped together a useful partnership to guide the favourites to 143, taking 25 off the second-to-last over.
Remarking that he thought the pair "played very well", Morgan said they allowed England to build a score where they could "build pressure if we took wickets early".
They certainly did that, with Willey starring once again as he helped England reduce Afghanistan to 13-3. It was comfortable enough for Morgan's men from then on, the minnows eventually finishing on 127-9, England winning by 15 runs.
Morgan was relieved to get the win, citing that "playing a dangerous side like Afghanistan can be a banana skin", one that England navigated, and they'll now look ahead to the aforementioned crunch match against Sri Lanka.
