Graham Onions' four-wicket haul increased Durham’s day one advantage on day two at The Riverside against Surrey.

Onions took 4-68 as Jason Roy smashed 120 for Surrey after Mark Footitt completed another five-wicket haul to wrap up Durham’s first innings, the visitors closing 299-7 on day two, over 100 behind.

Footitt finishes off Durham

It took just 16 balls on Tuesday morning to finish off Durham’s first innings as Footitt claimed his third five-wicket haul in as many innings when he saw Onions caught for 14.

Durham had added just eight to their overnight score as Keaton Jennings was left 201 not out, Footitt returning 5-90.

Mark Wood took the new ball for Durham fresh off England duty and took under four overs to get a wicket as he saw the dangerous Rory Burns caught behind for just 15.

But Durham’s potent seam attack was stifled from then on as Dominic Sibley was joined by Kumar Sangakkara, the opener going at a characteristically steady pace.

It wasn’t easy going for the Surrey pair as they went at just three an over for the next 25 overs, which saw them pass lunch and bat deep into the afternoon session.

They were looking set all set to pile the pressure on the Durham attack, but Onions had other ideas.

He was to strike twice in an over as he got a ball through the defence of Sibley for 31 before trapping Sri-Lankan Sangakkara in front just two short of a half-century three balls later.

Ansari and Roy pile on the runs for Surrey

99-1 had become 100-3, but Zafar Ansari and Jason Roy were brought together.

Their partnership was to span 45 overs and 164 runs, Ansari hitting 48 before he was caught by Paul Collingwood off Jennings, who just couldn’t keep put of the action.

Roy went on to smash 120 from just 165 balls including 15 fours as he becomes the next name to add his list as a potential man to fill one of the voids in England’s shaky test batting line-up.

Onions strikes again

Onions picked up his third vital wicket of the innings when Roy was given out LBW 10 overs from the close and the pace man nipped one more out when Tom Curran was bowled five overs from the end of the day.

Sam Curran and Gareth Batty will resume not out on Wednesday morning, looking to eat into their 109-run deficit with just three first innings wickets in hand.
