Middlesex have been crowned County Championship Division One champions for the first time since 1993 after bowling Yorkshire out in the final session of the match to win by 61 runs.

Gripping final day at Lord's

The final day of the match promised so much and it delivered right up until the final four overs of the game. Both sides knew they had to win the match in order to stop Somerset from winning the title.

The day began with Middlesex batting in their second innings on 81-2 and they quickly piled on the runs. Dawid Malan was the star for the hosts in their batting effort making 116.

The hosts finally declared just before the tea break to leave Yorkshire needing 240 to win from 40 overs.

What was to happen next was truly sensational. Despite Tim Bresnan scoring 55 for the visitors, the heroics came from Toby Roland-Jones, who took 6-54, including a hat-trick to finish the match for the home side to make sure they won the Division one title.

Malan and Gubbins put on 198 for third wicket

The decisive final day in the race for the County Championship Division One title got underway at Lords with Middlesex on 81-2 in their second innings, 39 runs behind Yorkshire.

Malan and Nick Gubbins were at the crease for the hosts and they made the pitch look very flat as the took their partnership past the century mark.

Malan and Gubbins also went to their half centuries in the partnership that made it's way to 198 when it was finally broken by Azeem Rafiq.
Gubbins was the man to fall just short of his second century of the game as he was out for 93.

The wicket fell just before lunch as the hosts went to lunch  on 201-3 with a lead of 81. Malan went to the lunch break on 99 not out as he looked to continue on in the afternoon session.

Malan lead the way for the hosts with a brilliant 116

The afternoon session began with Malan getting to his century which just showed how good the pitch still was. He was now joined at the crease by Stevie Eskinazi as the pair went about building a solid lead.

The partnership got to 65 when Yorkshire captain Alex Lees got the wicket of Malan for 116.

Both sides came to a decision about a declaration

This signalled something very strange as it seemed like there was an agreement between the two teams for the Yorkshire bowlers to allow Middlesex to get to a certain score.

Adam Lyth and Lees then decided to bowl dollies for the batsmen to try and score boundaries of every ball.

One of these dollies from Lees got the wicket of John Simpson for 31. This brought the home captain James Franklin to the crease.

Alongside Eskinazi, who went to his half century during the late hitting, Franklin was hitting the ball everywhere until Lyth removed him for 30 which signalled the declaration from the hosts.

It meant that Eskinazi remained 78 not out as the hosts declared on 359-6, setting the visitors a score off 240 to get from 40 overs in the evening session.

The evening session then began with the visitors coming out fast and trying to get on with it but they lost three quick wickets going for runs.

Roland-Jones takes six wickets in the final session as Middlesex won by 61 runs

Lyth was the first to fall for 13 off the bowling of Roland-Jones before Lees fell for 20 off the bowling of Tim Murtagh.

The third quick wicket to fall was that of David Willey of the bowling of Murtagh for 11.

This then brought first innings centurion Bresnan to the crease to join Gary Ballance and the pair started to build a very solid partnership.
The pair took their partnership to 50 when Ballance went for one to many big shots and was out for 30 of the bowling of Steven Finn.

Bresnan was still at the crease for the visitors though and he brought up a quick half-century to keep their hopes alive.

The hopes were then dashed a little when Roland-Jones had him trapped LBW for 55 to give the hosts some hope.

The hope got even stronger when Roland-Jones got another wicket, bowling Andrew Gale for 22 to leave the score on 160-6.

Roland-Jones was now on fire as he got his fourth wicket of the innings by removing Rafiq for 4.

The game was now unbearable for everyone involved in the match. The home fans though seen their team keeping going and Finn bowled Steven Patterson for 2 before Roland-Jones got his fifth wicket in the next over, removing Andrew Hodd for 17.

It meant that Ryan Sidebottom came to the crease with Roland-Jones on a hattrick. The hattrick did come from Roland-Jones to finish the game as he bowled Sidebottom around his legs for a first ball duck to win the match for his team.

Yorkshire were all out for 178 to hand the County Championship Division One title to Middlesex.
