India began the day batting and they managed to take their lead up to 134 runs thanks in large to Ravindra Jadeja, who made 90 and Ravichandran Ashwin, who made 72.
Ashwin then came back after tea to take three wickets in the final session of the day to really leave England on the brink of going 2-0 down in the series with two days left in the series.
Hosts lower order put visitors to the sword
India began day three on 271-6, 12 runs behind England's first innings score of 283.
Ashwin resumed his innings on 57 not out while Jadeja resumed 31 not out.
The pair continued frustrate England at the start of the morning session but just as the partnership looked like it was going to go past the 100 mark, Ben Stokes removed Ashwin for 72 in what was the only wicket that visitors took in the morning session.
This was due to Jadeja, who passed his fifty, and Jayant Yadav as the pair took their partnership past the fifty mark to take the total past the 350 mark.
At lunch, India were on 354-7 with a lead of 71 and had high hopes of getting their lead well passed the 100 mark.
After lunch, Jayant and Jadeja continued on their merry way until a rash shot from Jadeja, when he was on 90, gave Adil Rashid his fourth wicket of the innings.
Jayant though as he had shown in the second test, continued to play his shots and brought up his maiden test fifty as India took their score past the 400 mark.
Stokes took third test five-for
Finally, after a dropping him a few times, Jayant fell for 55 of the bowling of Stokes to give England some breathing space.
Stokes also removed Umesh Yadav to finish with figures of 5-73 as India were all out 417 with a lead of 134 at tea.
The question therefore after tea was whether England could survive without much damage at the close and the answer was they couldn't.
India's spinners once again leave England in a pickle
Due to an injury to Haseeb Hameed, Joe Root opened the batting alongside Alistair Cook as the pair looked to get the team off to a good start.
The problem was that Ashwin found his rhythm right from the off and removed Cook for 12 and Moeen Ali for five to reduce England to 39-2.
That brought Jonny Bairstow to the crease to join Root and the pair started to build a good partnership until a good delivery from Jayant removed Bairstow for 15.
Stokes, therefore, came to the crease but he also didn't last very long as Ashwin got his third wicket in the innings to remove him for five to leave England on the edge.
No further wickets fell for England as the closed the day on 78-4, trailing India by 56 runs with Root the key tomorrow as he will resume on 36 not out.
