Luton Town slumped to their third successive defeat as Portsmouth reigned supreme at Fratton Park.

Goals from strikers Matt Tubbs and Ryan Taylor were the difference between to two sides.

30-year-old Tubbs’ bagged his 20th goal of the season as he slotted home from six yards out following a Jed Wallace pass.

Tubbs' goal separated the two sides for neigh on an hour before the Bournemouth loanee turned provider as Taylor scored his second goal in as many games, firing his effort into the top left corner.

The Hatters were dealt a massive blow at half-time as their defensive lynchpin and captain, Steve McNulty had to be substituted due to injury.

The visitors responded well after falling a goal behind inside the first couple of minutes.

Before half-time they threatened to equalise on numerous occasions but failed to force Pompey’s Paul Jones into action.

Leading goalscorer Mark Cullen - who’s bagged 12 goals this campaign - had the best of the chances for the Hatters on the stroke of half-time as he headed over the bar.

Luton came firing out of the blocks after the restart with former Ipswich midfielder Andy Drury having a shot blocked from outside the box.

The home side almost extended their lead on the stroke of the hour as Wallace came agonisingly close to netting his 15th for the season, watching his left-footed 20-yard strike smash against the post.

With just under a quarter of an hour left, substitute Fraser Franks nearly pulled one back for the Town, his effort was saved comfortably by Jones.

Cameron McGeehan came close to grabbing a consolation goal deep into stoppage time, the Norwich loanee failed to give the 2,700 travelling fans something to cheer about as he lashed his effort miles over the target.

Luton slipped into sixth place in League Two as Bury beat Mansfield Town 1-0.
