Benoit Costil stole the show as his Rennes side comfortably set aside fellow Breton neighbours, Lorient.

The away side, Rennes, were dominant from the off with Sylvain Armand and Pedro Henrique both striking at the Lorient goal in the early stages.

Benoit Costil played an important part in the overall result, and the first time he was put into action was Walid Mesloub's long ranger. He had Costil scrambling across goal as the ball bounced in front of him. The keeper, who is desperate for a Euro 2016 place, managed to react well to palm the ball away.

Rennes were in the lead soon after through centre-back, Mexer, who headed his team in front on 17 minutes. Paul-Georges Ntep's corner found Mexer in space, and the Mozambique international headed into the ground and passed by Benjamin Lecomte in goal.

Costil was then forced to maintain the lead quickly after going ahead, equaling successive efforts towards his goal mouth. Lamine Kone and Jordan Ayew had their efforts halted by the highly rated stopper.

Rennes could have doubled their lead when Pedro Henrique placed a shot around Lecomte from six yards, only for the ball to be headed away from the waiting defender behind the keeper.

Another scare from Lorient, once again intercepted by Costil, was the last chance for the home side to try and draw the game level before it became an uphill task.

A corner from the other side, this time hit by Pedro Henrique, found a free Sylvain Armand whose bullet header burst the net at the far corner.

Before the break, Lorient could have began that uphill task of getting level, but Ayew was greedy in front of goal when he was one-on-one with Costil. The strker opted to shoot rather than pass to his free team mate.

Rennes stretched their lead once again five minutes into the second half through Abdoulaye Doucoure. The tall centre-mid received a cut-back from Ntep and slotted the ball into the far right corner.

The best save, or interception, of the game fell at the star of the show Costil as he got a vital glove on the ball as Benjamin Jeannot tried to round him one-on-one in the box.

Ayew and Jeannot again could not beat Costil with their following attempts on goal- it was one of those nights for the Rennes keeper.

Although it was the Costil show, he had the post to thank to stop a consolation near the end of the game. Substitute, Gianni Bruno, smacked the outside of the post from close range leaving Costil motionless as his clean sheet record was threatened.

The final chance of the derby fell to the eventual winners as Doucoure and substitute, Kamil Grosicki linked up well only for the Pole's eventual shot to be collected by Lecomte.

Rennes have another Breton Derby in their next game as they host Guingamp, meanwhile Lorient travel to strugglers Lens.
