Scunthorpe United boss Mark Robins believes new acquisition Scott Laird will be key to the club’s successes next season.

27-year-old Laird put pen-to-paper on a three year deal at Glanford Park on Wednesday, and manager Mark Robins has expressed his happiness at capturing the former Preston-North-End man.

He told the official club website that he is “delighted to get him (Laird)” and that the defender has a vast amount of experience in League One.

Robins also reiterated his delight at the capture of left back Laird, by adding that he is “the right sort of player” that will “come in and compliment the dressing room.”

And the manager also believes that Laird will add the extra quality that the team lacked last campaign: "The delivery in the final third is going to be important for us and we needed to get that to be a little better. Scott will provide that.”

Laird becomes the Iron’s sixth summer signing

Attacking full-back Scott Laird became Scunthorpe’s sixth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Stephen Dawson, Isaac Assenso and Charlie Goode from Rochdale, Leeds United and Hendon. And Laird also joins Jack King and Scott Wiseman in making the move from Preston to Scunthorpe.

Laird began his career at Plymouth Argyle, having loan spells at Tiverton Town, Torquay United and Stevenage, and went on to sign permanently at Broadhill Way in 2008.

After a four year spell in Hertfordshire, Taunton Born Laird signed for Preston-North-End, joining up with his former manager Graham Westley.

And after an impressive three year stint at Deepdale, with one of the defender’s highlights surely being his goal against giants Manchester United, in the FA Cup last season, he joins League One Scunthorpe. And his time at Preston-North-End ended superbly with the Lancashire club being promoted back to the Championship, through the League One Play-Offs last month.
