Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has insisted that striker Robin van Persie must adapt better to his methods if he is to have a future at the club.

The 31-year-old only managed 10 goals last season and was frustrated by a frequent amount of injuries. He only has a year left on his current contract and the Dutchman is under no illusion what he must do to if he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

It has been reported that van Gaal informed the striker that he will surplus to requirements, unless he manages to find a way to cope with the vigorous training sessions.

Van Persie has struggled to keep up physically

The former Netherlands manager believes in supreme fitness and has reservations whether the striker, who has a history of knee injuries, can withstand the physical work required.

A host of clubs are lining up are apparently looking to snap up the forward, especially from the Serie A, with Juventus showing a particular interest. However his current salary of £1m per month could prove to be a sticking point for any potential move.

If he were to leave he would be the second striker to go out of the Old Trafford exit door. The club decided that they wouldn’t make Radamel Falcao’s move permanent after he produced just four goals and has recently moved to Chelsea, on another loan deal.

United are on the search for a forward to replace the Colombian, ahead of an apparent expensive summer - with a reported £200million to spend.

Could Kane be the answer?

One of those has been Tottenham striker Harry Kane. He had an excellent breakthrough season scoring 30 goals in all competitions, which has led to van Gaal apparently readying a £40million bid for the 21-year-old.

However the PFA Young Player of the Year has shot down those rumours saying: “I am happy at Spurs and I look forward to the future with Spurs."

He admitted, "I have seen there is interest but that's all I know. It is flattering for other clubs to maybe be interested.”
