Manchester United have submitted a bid for Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos, according to The Independent.

The paper claim United have offered just over £30m for Ramos, however this falls considerably short compared to the Spanish club's £46m valuation.

United bidding below Madrid valuation for Ramos

The thinking behind United's bid is £46m represents poor value for a player who's 29 and facing the end of his career.

With Ramos also reportedly fallen out with the Madrid heirarchy and considering a move away from the Bernabeau, United could seal a deal for the defender at a lower price.

The same paper have reported that United's bid for Ramos is independent from any attempt from Madrid to buy goalkeeper David de Gea, despite various reports seeing Ramos as a make-weight for any deal for De Gea to happen.

Despite Madrid having said previously that they would only let Ramos leave the club if his £180m buy-out clause is paid, this is very unlikely due to his age and also him possibly wanting to leave.

However United recognise that Ramos may actually want to stay at the Santiago Bernabeau, and he could only be playing on the rumours of his possible departure from the club so he gets himself a new bumper contract.

Ramos unsettled at Madrid with contract situation

Despite United wanting to be reduce the risk of the defender using them for a new contract, the Red Devils have been encouraged by Ramos' position at the club after there were was a proposed meeting between himself and Madrid on Wednesday morning.

Ramos reportedly told his club to listen to offers so he may leave the club, after a meeting between himself, Real Madrid's chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez and his brother and agent, Rene Ramos, took place at Madrid's Valdebebas training ground.

Ramos' discontent at Madrid stems from him being discontent with his earnings of £3.9m a season. Despite Madrid offering the defender a new contract of £5.3m, the defender believes he's worth much more than that and his annoyance has grown further as he 'cannot understand the club allowing him to enter the last two years of his contract.'
