Gerard Deulofeu spent the 2013/14 season at Goodison Park and has returned for a fee of £5 million.

The Spaniard, 21, spent last season on loan back in La Liga with Sevilla but struggled for significant game time after an apparent falling out with manager Unai Emery. After the loan spell ended, word on Merseyside was that Deulofeu wanted a return to Goodison Park and for a chance to work with Roberto Martinez again.

Troubled loan at Sevilla

Deulofeu returned to La Liga after a successful loan spell at Everton with the expectations of taking his talents to another level. His season was indifferent and finished with a total of 13 substitute appearances and 16 starts for Sevilla - chipping in three goals and nine assists.

He started a majority of Sevilla's games post-winter break but cracks appeared in the fall when rumours surfaced of a falling out with manager Unai Emery. Deulofeu became an unused sub for the most part with the odd start in the Europa League and Copa Del Rey competitions.

Are Everton back on track?

The question now for Everton fans, is where does this move leave them? Deulofeu’s return will no doubt delight fans who had been calling for his signing last summer before he returned to Spain. In his previous spell with the Toffees, Deulofeu scored 6 goals - including a phenomenal effort away to Arsenal

His pace and directness gave Everton a different dimension they had been missing for the years under David Moyes. Deulofeu troubled teams that sat deep and only tried to beat Everton via set pieces. This was notable in the 4-0 win against Stoke City at Goodison Park, where Deulofeu had numerous one on one runs with the Stoke defenders and stole a march on those back tracking to help - he scored the opening goal in that game. He developed significantly at Everton, even beginning to track back in defence towards the end of his loan spell.

The move signals intent from Everton manager Roberto Martinez to get his side back on track and towards the success of the 2013/14 season after a indifferent 2014/15 campaign. It is the second move Everton have made this summer following the signing of Tom Cleverley on a free. Martinez will no doubt still be looking for a few more players, including replacements for Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz
