Tom Cairney has joined Fulham, the club have confirmed.

The midfielder has signed a four-year deal at Craven Cottage, leaving Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee due to there being two years remaining on his contract at Ewood Park.

Cairney has been linked with a move to Fulham for the majority of the summer, and the Lancashire Telegraph has reported that the fee for which the player was bought could rise to between £3.5million and £4million, taking into account add-ons and a sell-on fee for his former club, Hull City.

Cairney wants to get started

Cairney told the club's website that he is "delighted" with the switch and is eager to begin training with his new teammates, though he was clear in stating that for him, "the hard work starts now".

The 24-year-old was attracted to the club as, "for most of [his] life, Fulham have been [in the] Premier League" and because "they've had some great players over the years." With the Cottagers having "only been out of [the top flight] for a year," Cairney is clearly targeting promotion with them as he concluded his interview by stating that "every player wants to play in the Premier League" and that to "do that with Fulham...would be fantastic."

The midfielder was an important player for Rovers

The player leaves Blackburn after two years with the club. He initially joined them on loan from Hull, where he was struggling for regular football having progressed through their youth ranks, and made the deal at Ewood Park permanent after just six months, following 24 games and two goals from midfield in the first half of the 2013-14 season.

The next 18 months saw him become an integral part of the team, scoring seven goals in 61 games as they pushed for a play-off spot. However, having missed out on the top six for two successive years, finishing ninth this season and eighth the year before, Cairney clearly feels that a move was needed to help him achieve his aim of returning to the Premier League.

He played 11 games for Hull in the top flight in the 2009-10 season as a teenager, but was not regularly involved. The team were relegated that campaign, with it being in the Championship when he started to get more games.

A busy summer at the Cottage

Cairney is Fulham's third signing of the summer, with them looking to improve on last season's 17th place finish in the Championship that saw them get far too involved in the relegation battle. The club have also signed Andy Lonergan from Bolton Wanderers and Ben Pringle from Rotherham United, both on free transfers, as they attempt to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming 2015-16 campaign.
