For the last few weeks at least, it has been a case is it on? is it off? with Arsenal's interest in Chelsea's Petr Cech, with the deal looking all but done, except confirmation. Where does this leave Arsenal's no.1 keeper from last season, David Ospina?

The Colombian was signed from Nice last summer and has enjoyed his first season in the premier league, he took a while to settle, injury following an impressive world cup campaign with Colombia did not do much to help his cause.

He managed 18 league games last season after replacing the faltering Wojciech Szczesny, 8 clean sheets, 11 goals conceded and 35 saves were what followed, this was thought to have cemented his place as new Arsenal no.1.

Ospina has taken his good form to Chile, for the Copa America. Before their exit at the quarter final stage to Argentina on penalties he had only conceded the one goal in three games, pulling off some remarkable saves in the process.

Petr Cech's arrival

The signing of Cech is seen as another signal of intent from Arsenal, many believe he is the world class keeper they have been lacking since the days of David Seaman, however this has thrown doubt over Ospina's future with the Colombian now being linked with a move away.

Stories of a move to Turkey for £3.5 million may be a little premature and Arsenal should be fighting tooth and nail to retain his services, he has proved himself at the highest level, following his phenomenal first season he should be given a chance to contest Cech for the no.1 spot.

One problem with this is, you can imagine it has been a contractual requirement of the Czech keeper that he is the club's no.1 keeper before a ball is kicked, after-all he wouldn't be leaving Chelsea's bench just to sit on Arsenal's.

Cech and Ospina would keep both focused on retaining their place

It is important that Arsenal have competition for places, the presence of both Cech and Ospina would welcome that to the Emirates, Arsene Wenger's biggest problem has been that the team has picked itself, squad depth has been a major problem in the past, this seems to now have been addressed.

Ospina still has two years left on his current deal and you would hope that he would have a fighting mentality, and want to challenge for his spot.

The Colombian was dropped for the FA Cup final triumph over Aston Villa in May, he was believed to be less than happy with Wenger, this could be where these exit rumours have materialized from.

Keeping two top goalkeepers happy is never an easy job, as Jose Mourinho has found out with the exit of Cech, Barcelona adopt an interesting method of having Claudio Bravo as their keeper for La Liga games and Marc-Andre ter Stegen as their keeper for ALL cup competitions, this appears to have worked well for them as they lifted a league and cup treble last season, this is an approach Arsenal MUST consider if they are to keep both Cech and Ospina content next season.
