New Everton signing Gerard Deulofeu - who was signed on a permanent deal this week - strongly believes his new club have what it takes to break into the top four next season. The promising 21-year-old is a product of the famous La Masia academy and is targeting a Champions League qualification place.

Deulofeu spent the 2013-14 season on loan at Everton where they narrowly missed out to Arsenal - finishing just seven points behind Arsene Wenger's side - and the Spaniard believes they can go one better this time.

Roberto Martinez was under fire for much of last season as the Toffees had a tough campaign, eventually finishing 11th, but for much of the season they were relegation contenders.

This time around there are no distractions; there is no Europa League to contend with next season, which has historically proven to hinder teams more than benefit them.

"Last time I was here two years ago we finished fifth so this time it would be great to finish fourth and go into the Champions League," said the Catalan attacker who was full of praise for Everton manager Roberto Martinez

"He played a very big role but it was my decision," he added. "I wanted to come back to Everton - it was great that he wanted me to come back as much as I did."

The pacey forward spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he failed to make much of an impact.

What will Deulofeu contribute?

Everton are rightly excited about his arrival, as he impressed while being on loan at Goodison Park two seasons ago, and Martinez may be the manager to get the best out of him.

For much of last season Everton's £28 million signing Romelu Lukaku was starved of service, and cut a very isolated figure. Martinez has been on the look out for a "no.10" who can link the midfield and the attack, and Deulofeu has already shown he is capable of doing just that.

His previous Everton record

The Spaniard will be looking to improve on his previous performances for Everton, where he was used sparingly. In 2013/14 he scored three goals, contributed three assists, created nine other chances and made 212 successful passes.

Those stats don't seem great but bare in mind that he only featured for 901 minutes of Premier League football in 25 games - which equates to just over 30 minutes a match. If Martinez can get him focused, the fee of £5 million could be one of the bargains of this month's transfer window.
