Leeds United have accepted a bid from Sheffield United for striker Billy Sharp, according to Sky Sports.

After plenty of rumours over the summer linking Sharp back to Bramall Lane, it is believed that Sheffield have now agreed a fee of £500,000 with Leeds for the player.

Adkins big fan of Sharp

The Blades' new manager Nigel Adkins is admittedly a huge fan of Sharp, and if the deal in question goes through, it will be the third time that Adkins has signed the player in his career.

At the beginning of June, Adkins played down rumours of interest in signing Sharp, saying that, via the Yorkshire Post, whilst the player is one that "[he] know[s], a great lad and scores goals," he "is a Leeds United player as it stands."

Yet, the speculation seems to have been more than just that, with a bid having now reportedly been launched and accepted.

Can Sharp rectify poor runs with the Blades?

Sharp started his career with the Blades, coming through their youth ranks before making his first team debut in 2004 as an 18-year-old. However, he failed to make the cut at the club and would join Scunthorpe United just a year later - the club where he and Adkins were first acquainted.

The manager took charge a year after Sharp joined, but the two would spend only a season together as the striker's 30 goals in 45 League One appearances earned him a move back to the Blades in 2007.

However, Sharp struggled back at his old club, scoring just 13 goals in 61 games over the course of three years. He was loaned and then sold to Doncaster Rovers, where he was far more fruitful with 40 goals in 82 league games, and would be reunited with Adkins at Southampton in 2011 and again at Reading in 2013.

Sharp does not have the best goal-scoring record with the Blades, but his previous tallies in the third tier are spectacular, whilst Adkins can certainly get the best out of him given their good working relationship, if the deal goes through.

Leeds seem happy to let the player go after he scored just five goals in the Championship this season, especially with striker Chris Wood having already joined this summer from Leicester City.
