Manchester United will not seek to sign another centre-back during the transfer window, after their main target, Sergio Ramos seems to be staying at the Bernabeau after reports claim he's close to agreeing a new contract with Real Madrid.

The Daily Mail claim despite Ramos being a target for Louis van Gaal, the United manager is satisfied with his current crop of defenders which are Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and possibly Daley Blind, after featuring in the position in pre-season.

Ramos the only option for United

The Dutch midfielder, who was signed as a defensive shield for the defence, would've reaped much confidence from United's 3-1 win against Barcelona, after he kept Uruguyan hot-shot Luis Suarez at bay.

Van Gaal also has young defenders Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair at his disposal, as well as Michael Carrick who can deputise in the position if needed.

It was thought Valencia and Argentine centre-back Nicolas Otamendi was a long-term target for United, however the same newspaper claim there has been no interest shown by United for the 27-year-old.

Although it seemed Van Gaal wanted to bolster his defence with a world-class defender, which would've been Ramos, the United manager only tried to sign the Spanish international as a bargaining chip as Madrid tried to pursue David De Gea.

Ramos close to new Real Madrid deal

However with Ramos close to signing a new deal at the Spanish giants, there seems to be a knock-on effect to Van Gaal's squad. Their goalkeeper, De Gea will not leave the club during this transfer window and they will also not sign another defender.

With the Van Gaal adding midfielder reniforcements to the squad, it seems their may be one signing left for United before the window closes and it may be to boost the forward line as United have been linked with a move for Barcelona wing-man Pedro.
