Everton host Watford at Goodison Park for the Premier League opener and Roberto Martinez has hosted his first weekly press conference of the season.

He spoke about the possible injuries affecting his starting line up and how he felt the pre-season schedule went, among other topics regarding the game this weekend.

Stones and Mirallas should be fit

Martinez said that he “expectsJohn Stones and Kevin Mirallas to shake off injuries sustained during Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial against Villarreal on Sunday. The pair both suffered knocks to their ankles during the game and came off but their return would be a huge positive for the Toffees.

Martinez also said that Gerard Deulofeu has a “chance” to be fit for the game. The winger has not played since the early part of pre-season after suffering a hamstring injury but could make the bench for Saturday's game.

Martinez sweating on Lukaku fitness

Martinez had been sure that Romelu Lukaku would be fit for the game, after he rested him during the Villarreal game, but is now unsure whether or not the striker will make it.

Lukaku had suffered muscle fatigue during the game against Dundee but now Martinez says he needs to asses Lukaku further.

Martinez said that the Belgian striker will need extra assessment in the next 48 hours to see what his “role is going to be at the weekend.”

Pre-season was a success

Martinez said he was “delighted” that pre-season was such a “positive” period to assess his players. Youngsters were given opportunities which a number of them took, and Martinez said he knows “where we (Everton) are, where we stand and what we need.

The new signings, Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu were able to hit the ground running with Cleverley looking like a natural within the group.

Everton still need a few more players

Martinez admitted that he still needs another two or three players for this season but as usual would not talk about other teams' players. Martinez said that when the window shuts, Everton will be a “stronger” team.

Martinez confirmed that Tomas Andrade from River Plate would be joining up with the Blues on loan but would be playing with the academy with a view to a future move.
