Sunderland’s pursuit of Jonathan de Guzman may not be over according to the player’s agent.
The North-East club agreed a deal for the Dutchman last week to bring him on a season-long deal from Italian club Napoli with a view to making the deal permanent next summer.
De Guzman rejects move
However, after pondering the deal, De Guzman rejected a move to Wearside with the likes of the Bournemouth and Ligue 1 side Marseille interested.
Despite that his agent, Fabian Parisi, has said that the 27-year-old is keeping his options open and said that he could reconsider a move to Dick Advocaat’s side if the opportunity was a loan move without any other commitments.
Parisi said that they currently working with Napoli to find a solution that suits “everybody”. He went on to say that if Sunderland were willing to de Guzman on loan without “anything else” they would probably take the deal “into account”.
De Guzman would be a great addition to Advocaat’s side and could possibly be a replacement for Italian Emanuel Giaccherini.
Giaccherini close to exit
The club are believed to be in talks with Bologna to take the former Juventus man on loan with the option of purchasing him next summer.
The Dutch coach will not stand in the way of the 30-year-old’s way of making the move back to Italy as he believes that Giaccherini - one of the club’s top earners - is not cut out for Premier League football. Advocaat has already made five signings so far in this summer’s transfer window and is still keen to bolster his squad ahead of deadline day on Tuesday.
Toivonen in talks
Apart from his compatriot, De Guzman, Advocaat’s other main target has been Swedish international, Ola Toivonen. The 29-year-old, who currently plays his football in France with Rennes, has worked under Advocaat during their time at PSV Eindhoven and it has been reported the striker is currently in advanced talks over a move to the North East.
Sunderland will play their final match before the international break on Saturday, August 29 when they take on Aston Villa.
