Steven Gerrard won't be returning to his beloved Liverpool on loan in January, after Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garby ruled out the prospect.

After bringing an end to his long term spell on L4 by moving to Los Angeles Galaxy upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season, it was expected by some that Gerrard would return to Merseyside on a January loan move, after the MLS season concludes in December.

No loan for Gerrard

Garby however, ruled this out when asked about the prospect of Gerrard leaving. He stated that it wasn't something that was being contemplated, and he didn't expect to see many of the "high-level designated players" depart on loan this time around.

This means that Gerrard won't follow suit to the likes of David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan, who all had loan spells at the likes of AC Milan, Arsenal and Everton whilst playing their trade in the United States.

Will he fly back for training?

It is highly likely that Gerrard will still complete training sessions with the squad during his off-season, attempting to keep up his fitness whilst helping manager Brendan Rodgers by lending advice and experience to the younger players.

This is also something done by other older players, with Henry notably someone who was often willing to go and train with the Arsenal team during early months of the year.

Not that Gerrard is short of form or fitness, having played 10 games for Galaxy since his move there, winning seven of them. He's allowed more attacking influence than his later days at Liverpool, and already has two goals and four assists to his name.

Gerrard himself has admitted in his latest autobiography that, despite having offers from "one or two" major European clubs, he doesn't see a loan move in the future just yet.
