Huddersfield secured a shock first league win of the season at The Valley against a Charlton side who were the favourites pre-game. Goals from Harry Bunn and Emyr Huws sealed the win for Chris Powell's men against his former club.

Bunn latched on to a Sean Scannell cross to put the visitors in the lead. Shortly after Huws doubled Town's lead with an impressive 25 yard free kick. Naby Sarr pulled one back for the Addicks shortly before half time after connecting with Johann-Berg Gudmundsson's cross.

Charlton had the first chances of the game. Gudmundsson was just wide with a left footed shot, while Jordan Cousins fired his shot high and wide a couple of minutes later.

Visitors Take Lead

However somewhat against the run of play Huddersfield took the lead. Scannell delivered a cross into the area which Bunn connected with and fired past Nick Pope in the Charlton goal. This awakened Huddersfield, who'd made a slow start to the game.

Bunn was at it again soon after the opener as Mustapha Carayol crossed in to the striker but but header was saved by Pope. The game then settled into an end to end pace. Both the Addicks and the Terriers displaying some good possession.

Carayol Escapes Sending Off

A moment of perhaps controversy as Carayol was booked for a high boot which caught Cousins in the side of the head. Referee Charles Breakspear believing it only required the yellow card.

Huddersfield certainly didn't look like a team which started the night in the bottom three. The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes before half time, Huws curled in a marvellous 25 yard free kick which was well deserved following Charlton playing poorly.

Despite playing poorly the hosts got on the scoresheet a few minutes before the break with Sarr heading a Gudmundsson cross past Jed Steer and giving the hosts a lifeline.

Second Half Pressure

Charlton started the second half stronger, finally starting to apply some pressure to Huddersfield. Boss Guy Luzon must have had some firm words to give his Addicks side as the home side came out on top in the opening minutes of the second period.

Their pressure almost came to nothing however as Ishmael Miller headed just wide following Jason Davidson's corner. The hosts then almost had an eqaualizer as 'keeper Pope's long ball reached big striker Simon Makienok, but his first time shot went just wide of the Huddersfield goal.

Perfect Chance To Equalize Missed

Neither side could really find the ascendancy as the second half wore on. Huddersfield seemed content to let Charlton try and find the equalizer, but a lack of clinical finishing in the final third meant they struggled to get any real efforts on goal.

Makienok then missed the best chance to get an equalizer. The towering striker made contact with Gudmundsson's corner but he skied his effort from inside the six yard box.

Charlton had a flurry of shots in the closing minutes but just couldn't find a breakthrough against a resilient Huddersfield side, who inflict Charlton's second defeat of the season. The pressure in second half stoppage time was well handled by Town, who are now up and running in the Championship.
