Hull City are through to their first ever Capital One Cup Quarter Final as they were victorious over Premier League Leicester City on penalties.

Following a drab 90 minutes from both sides, extra time saw the game burst into life. Substitute Jamie Vardy had a shot saved before fellow sub Riyad Mahrez tucked the rebound into the back of the net.

Hull were soon level as Abel Hernandez continued his hot streak by capitalizing on a Mark Schwarzer spill by equalizing for the home side. Mahrez's penalty miss was enough for Hull to go on and win as David Meyler scored the winning spot kick.

There were wholesale changes to both sides as Hull's first team regulars Allan McGregor, Ahmed Elmohamady and Abel Hernandez made way for Eldin Jakupovic, Ryan Taylor and Greg Luer respectively.

Leicester also rang the changes, as Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri made ten alterations to his team, which saw top scorer Jamie Vardy on the bench.

It was a lively start from both sides, with Andrej Kramaric having the first effort just 16 seconds into the game. The Leicester striker fired a shot from 20 yards out and went just wide of Jakupovic's goal. Hull soon registered their first chance as Richie De Laet had to be on hand to block Luer's well taken effort at goal.

Hull were arguably the stronger side in the first half, and Shaun Maloney almost opened the scoring in amazing fashion as his acrobatic volley from around eight yards out hit the side netting.

Diame The First Half Star

Mohamed Diame looked particularly strong during the opening period and was causing Leicester all sorts of problems down the right. He even almost scored a rare souvenir goal as Andy Robertson cut back to Luer, who dummied the ball into the path of Diame, but he blazed his shot over.

The visitors looked slow in the first half, and lacking any real cutting edge, as Hull were more attacking and were causing Ranieri's side all sorts of problems.

Hull continued to cause the visitors problems after the break, and were outplaying their Premier League opposition as Diame again was the man in the action. The Senegalese midfielder turned his man on the edge of the area and fired a shot just wide of Schwarzer's goal.

The Tigers were almost in again as Taylor headed just wide at the back post. The visitors were in trouble as Hull started to pile on the pressure. The Foxes were resilient in defence and were hard to break down.

Introduction Of Vardy

Ranieri introduced Premier League top scorer Vardy just after the hour mark and he was instantly in on the action as he teed up Joe Dodoo, but the youngster fired his shot well over the bar.

As the threat of extra time loomed both sides were starting to liven up. Hull went more attacking by bringing on Chuba Akpom and Hernandez. Meanwhile Vardy was looking more and more threatening for the visitors.

Leicester's first real chance of the evening came with ten minutes to go as Diame, who had a strong game, was caught out in possession. However the Hull 'keeper managed to cut out any potential threat and Leicester continued to look frustrated in front of goal.

Controversy

There was a real moment of controversy as Schwarzer fluffed his lines and spilled a header which, according to some camera angles, looked to have gone over the line. The lack of goal line technology evident as the referee didn't give the goal.

Extra time was needed as Akpom was booked for diving in the area, the Arsenal loanee went over in the box but Stuart Attwell claimed he took a dive and handed him a yellow card.

Deadlock Broken

Somewhat against the run of play Leicester took the lead. Substitute Mahrez was on hand to rebound Vardy's saved effort into an empty net as the visitors, who struggled to get into the game took the lead.

Hull felt hard done by as moments before they had appeals for a penalty turned down as Harry Maguire was brought down in the area before Leciester struck on the counter. The Hull fans also felt Vardy was in an offside position when he took his shot.

However the angry fans were soon silenced when Hernandez levelled the scores for the Tigers. The Uruguayan bundled home Akpom's rebound following another spillage by Schwarzer in the Leicester goal.

The dreaded penalties soon came around, as neither side could win it in 120 minutes of football. Following a drab 90 minutes, the game came alive in extra time.
