Following Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Watford on Saturday afternoon, United manager Louis van Gaal confirmed that both Ander Herrera and Phil Jones will not feature during the Reds' midweek UEFA Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven.

Injuries continue to try and derail United

United were forced into a makeshift lineup at Vicarage Road as they were without Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Luke ShawAntonio Valencia and Anthony Martial. However, the injury crisis which has enveloped the red half of Manchester only grew worse as they game went along when both Herrera and Jones were forced off after picking up knocks.

Van Gaal speaks out

The United boss spoke about the majority of those injured following the match.

"We are in a lousy period because there are a lot of injuries," Van Gaal said. "Jones and Herrera are not available for Wednesday. The first impression is they are not heavy injuries, but we have to play Wednesday. [Phil] Jones has a twisted ankle and [Ander] Herrera maybe a hamstring injury. [Wayne] Rooney is ill and illness is a matter of days, not weeks. I do expect that he shall play Wednesday. He is at home. Tomorrow he comes and then I can say more. [Anthony] Martial has a foot problem. It is not so heavy as the media has written but you never know, we have to wait and see."

Implications for PSV?

With Jones ruled out for Wednesday's match, Van Gaal will likely look to pair Daley Blind alongside Chris Smalling in the center of defence. Those two know each other well and have been United's normal central defensive pairing all season.

Moving higher up the pitch, the absence of Herrera and the potential absence of Martial could mean Wayne Rooney starts up front with Juan Mata slotting in behind him. That could well mean that Memphis Depay, who scored just his second Premier League goal of the season on Saturday, retains his place in the starting XI and gets the chance to take on his former club once again.

Manchester United take on PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night at 7:45 BST. Keep following VAVEL UK for the latest Manchester United news.
