Newport County have signed Oli McBurnie on loan from Swansea City, the clubs have confirmed.

McBurnie recently earned his first call-up for Scotland's under-21 side and will now go out on his first Football League loan to further his experience.

The 19-year-old joins Newport on a one-month deal initially, and will hope to impress in England's fourth tier in order to see this extended.

Youngster looking to make his mark

McBurnie joined Swansea in the summer for an undisclosed fee from League One side Bradford City, the sum reported to be at least a six-figure one.

However, the move came as some surprise to fans of both clubs given that the striker had yet to really make a mark at Valley Parade, playing in 15 games between 2013 and 2015, but failing to find the back of the net.

Furthermore, the majority of his appearances came off the bench, giving him little time to make an impact, and so for him to move on to a Premier League club before even breaking into a third-tier side was, unsurprisingly, unexpected.

Still, McBurnie has started life in Wales strongly, impressing for Swansea's under-21s. Now, he will look to grab this opportunity he has been granted with two hands as he returns to senior football, looking to improve further.

Perfect level for his development right now?

Having struggled to break through at Bradford, but having played well on loan in the non-league with Chester whilst still with the Bantams, one could argue that League Two could be the perfect level for McBurnie to really develop at the moment, sitting in between the two levels where his previous experience lies.

Newport will be keen for him to make an impact too given their current situation. The Wales-based club currently sit fourth-bottom in League Two and are on a run of four games without a win - having drawn all four.

Thus, they will hope McBurnie can bring goals to the team to push them up the standings and away from the danger zone.
