Championship club Queens Park Rangers are moving closer to appointing a new permanent manager with Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in talks over the vacancy.

QPR have been without a head coach since Chris Ramsey was relieved of his duties in early November, with former boss Neil Warnock taking temporary charge since then.

Burton, currently at the top of League One after promotion under Hasselbaink last season, are reported by the BBC to have accepted an approach for their popular manager, with the Dutchman now discussing personal terms with the London club.

A former top-class centre-forward

Hasselbaink, 43, enjoyed a successful playing career in England and overseas, turning out for clubs such as Leeds UnitedChelseaAtlético Madrid and Middlesbrough.

His prolific goalscoring also saw him pick up more than 20 international caps for the Netherlands, as well as winning the Premier League golden boot on two occasions.

His managing career started in 2013 with Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, before making a triumphant return to English football with Burton last year.

Hasselbaink leaves Burton as a genuine hero

The Brewers stormed to the fourth-tier title at a canter last season with five points between the champions and second-placed Shrewsbury Town, and Hasselbaink has continued to bring success so far this term.

They have won their last three league games, including a 2-1 win on Tuesday evening against Millwall, a club who began the 2014/15 season two divisions above Burton.

Should he agree terms with QPR and move on as expected, then, Hasselbaink will leave big shoes to fill at the Pirelli Stadium after an incredible two seasons in charge.

QPR face daunting December fixture list

His immediate challenge at Loftus Road would be to revive Rangers' fleeting promotion hopes. QPR were expected to be among the forerunners for promotion this season but, while they sit just five points shy of the play-off positions, they currently sit just inside the top half in 12th position.

They face a trip to Reading on Thursday evening before back-to-back home games with Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion, in a difficult set of fixtures against three sides who have emerged as genuine promotion contenders so far this season.

Reading are in the mix for the play-offs while Burnley are aiming for the top two, while Brighton have been the surprise package of the season in the second tier, sitting unbeaten at the top of the table ahead of the festive period.
