Southampton have recalled Sam Gallagher back early from his loan with MK Dons after he wasn't given much of an opportunity at the Championship club.

Saints had sent the 20-year-old to drop down a level with the intention of getting him first-team football at a competitive level, but Gallagher made just eight league appearances and failed to find the net for the recently promoted club.

The youngster joined the Championship team in the summer with a view to spending the whole season with Karl Robinson's side, but things didn't work out for the unfortunate Gallagher.

Gallagher ended last season in some style as he scored the winning goal in the U21 Premier League Cup, but despite having played for Dons most recently against Birmingham City at the end of December, things seem to have gone downhill.

Next step for Gallagher

The 6'4" forward, formerly of Plymouth Argyle, is now back with the club and has already resumed training on the South Coast.

He could go straight into the club's U21 side to face Liverpool in the league on Monday, but may find it difficult to get into the side as the trio of Ryan Seager, Josh Sims and Jake Hesketh have all been in great form of late and are all playing with great confidence.

League One could be his best option

Despite his obvious talent, having struggled to find his feet at Championship level Koeman may be more willing to send Gallagher down further to a League One club in hope of ensuring a spell of first-team football.

A number of clubs were thought to be interested in securing his signature at the start of the season, and this is likely to be the case once again.

Gallagher broke through in the 2013/14 season and made 20 appearances for Southampton, scoring in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.
