Manchester United's January transfer activity is shrouded in mystery this month with speculation instead firmly mounted on manager Louis van Gaal instead. If reports in Germany are to be believed however, that inactivity may be set to come to an end.

German publication Bild claim (via The Telegraph) that Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez is set for a move to Old Trafford this month. The paper says that United have targeted the Swiss international as their top defensive recruit and that a bid is being planned.

Rodriguez impressed versus United in Europe

Rodriguez, 23, has been linked with Real Madrid in the past and is fast developing a reputation as one the finest full-backs in Europe. His performances in this season's Champions League - against The Red Devils included - were stellar and is possible as to why van Gaal has now earmarked the player as the man for United.

With Die Wolfe having progressed to the knockout stages in United's stead, however, any move would seem unlikely for the time being.

Rodriguez himself has stated regarding former interest from Los Blancos

"I've not heard from Real. I don't know if there's anything in it. Even my manager has said nothing to me, so there is nothing new."

Defensive recruits on agenda for Van Gaal

After a turbulent campaign thus far both on and off the pitch, United are short in their defensive unit. Luke Shaw's absence has left a huge void on the left of defence and injuries elsewhere have compounded problems.

Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are closing on a return to action after respective shoulder and foot surgeries but with both having missed significant game time already and Shaw out til at least April, a move for 33-cap Rodriguez could be a smart move. Rodriguez has become known for his bursting runs on the flank, as well as his set piece deliveries.

As documented, however, any move is unlikely to materialise for the time being.
