Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has officially announced his retirement from professional football after terminating his contract with Inter Milan

Vidic had incredibly successful spell at United

Vidic spent eight years at Old Trafford winning five Premier League titles, and a Champions League title, but left in the summer of 2014 to join Inter Milan.

But since then, he has suffered too many injuries during his time there and has therefore decided the time was right to retire now.

Vidic speaking to ManUtd.com about his retirement said "the time has come for me to hang up my boots" which is a very sad day for football as Vidic was a true warrior, and he will be missed a lot, but Vidic said "the injuries I've had in the last few years have taken their toll."

Vidic thanks everyone for their support

The defender continued to say "I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and a big thanks to the supporters" and I'm sure the Untied fans would like to thank Vidic for his great service at United as he was an amazing servant for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson signed Vidic from Spartak Msocow for £7million in January 2006, a move not many United fans were sure about, but it didn't take him long to show how great a defender he was, and show what a bargain he was signed for as he was pivotal in the success of United over the next years.

Vidic developed a fantastic partnership with Rio Ferdinand

Vidic developed a fantastic partnership with fellow central defender Rio Ferdinand, becoming one of the best defensive partnerships in the Premier League if not the best at the time, and they were the backbone of what made United so great during 2008 and 2013.

Vidic during his time at United also won three League Cups, and a Club World Cup, but his latter years at the club were affected by a number of different injuries including ruptured cruciate knee ligaments against Basel in 2011. Nevertheless, he will always be remembered as legend by United fans.
