Speaking after Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City yesterday, Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere was gushing with pride as he completed 70 minutes of the game at the Etihad. However, the midfielder was not all smiles. His introduction to the game came to the expense of fellow countryman, Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck was forced off in the 24th minute of play, following a collision with former Gunner, Bacary Sagna. Welbeck, who returned from a long term knee injury in February, hobbled off the pitch and straight down the tunnel as fears around the Arsenal and England camps heightened. Since returning, the English striker has scored four times for his club, including a dramatic last minute winner against champions Leicester City on his return.

Rotten luck for Welbeck

With the Euros only a matter of weeks away, there are fears that Welbeck will be forced to sit out of the competition; following his fantastic contribution to the team in the qualifying stages of the competition. There is still hope for the striker as he prepares to undergo medical tests this week to reveal the extent of his injury.

However, Arsene Wenger has expressed his concerns for Welbeck, as he requested to be substituted claiming that he could not continue with the game. With the striker already missing ten months of football for the Gunners due to the former knee injury, the worry is there for England and Arsenal.

Will Hodgson hand both a chance?

Roy Hodgson will name his 23-man squad for the Euros this week, in which Welbeck will learn his fate should his injury not be as concerning as first expected. Also set to learn his summer plans is Jack Wilshere, who expressed his condolences to Welbeck, claiming the striker was ‘in hell’ following the injury.

Wilshere went on to say in an interview after the game: “Of course I didn’t want to get on like that. Danny has been through enough injuries.” Wilshere, who has recently returned to the field following his long term ankle injury, will be hoping that Hodgson has faith in him prior to the announcement of the England squad that will travel to France.

We hope that Danny Welbeck will be fit to play for England in the Euros; our thoughts are with the striker as he awaits the results of his medical test.
