Tottenham Hotspur’s home-grown talisman Harry Kane is set to be offered a new contract at the North London club.

Rumoured to be worth over £100,000 per week, the contract would make Spurs’ vice-captain the club’s highest paid player, breaking the club's wage structure in the process.

Mourinho era may prove tempting

Squawka are reporting that Daniel Levy is keen to do this deal imminently in order to see off interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United. United’s new manager Jose Mourinho, formerly of Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea, allegedly has over £200 million to spend on transfers, and Kane is one of many being repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Similar rumours circulated last summer with many reporting that the Red Devils were willing to pay up to £50 million for the England forward after just one season in the Premier League. However, having silenced his doubters, who labelled him as one of many ‘one season wonders’, by winning the Premier League golden boot with 25 goals, interest in Kane is set to intensify.

Prior to the announcement that Mourinho would be taking over at Old Trafford, rumours had emerged that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, after an impressive second season at White Hart Lane, was being targeted by the Manchester United hierarchy to replace Louis van Gaal. However, this provoked Daniel Levy to offer the Argentine a new five year contract which he duly signed.

Crucial to Tottenham's fortunes

It is generally thought of as an imperative that Spurs keep Harry Kane. As the club’s top scorer over the past two seasons with 59 goals in 101 appearances, he has led the line on his own for Spurs since November 2015, and Spurs have no alternative to Kane as a traditional centre forward.

Hence, Spurs this summer first and foremost must bring in a back up to Kane to relieve some of the physical and mental pressure on his shoulders, but also give the Englishman a new contract to secure his services for at least another year.

This is unlikely to happen until after the European Championships, in which Kane looks set to play an important role for England, alongside fellow strike partners Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney, and fellow Spurs members in the England squad Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker.

He last signed a new contract for Spurs in February 2015, and this deal runs until the 2020.
