The top tier of the SWPL had one big twist in the tail on Sunday in another intriguing round of results.

Spartans shock Glasgow City

Spartans pulled off one of the most incredible results in Scottish Women's Football as they defeated Glasgow City 3-0, producing an extraordinary performance.

This was the first league defeat for City since 21 September 2014, when Spartans beat City 1-0. And you have to go back six years for their last defeat before then.

Spartans took the lead in the 13th minute through Alana Marshall's stunning free-kick from 20 yards which found the bottom corner.

City came extraordinarily close to an equaliser when they had a shot cleared off the line, before the ball rolled across the line and then Leanne Ross saw her shot cannon off the crossbar.

But then, Spartans doubled their lead as Kirsty McLaughlin lobbed Gemma Fay from long distance.

Spartans made it 3-0 in the 85th minute when debutant Sarah Clelland's cross-cum-shot flew over Fay and into the net.

The win saw Spartans move up to fourth in the SWPL 1, whilst City had their lead at the top of the table cut down to five points.

Hibernian take Advantage

Hibernian took advantage of Glasgow City's shock defeat, as they beat Stirling University 3-0 to close the gap at the top to five points.

They took the lead through Sarah Ewens' strike, eight minutes into the first half.

Hibernian doubled their lead in the second half through Emma Brownlie and, late on, they made it 3-0 through Lizzie Arnot.

Hibs host Stirling University on Wednesday in their game in hand over City. Win that, and the gap will just be two points. Stirling remain bottom of the table.

Celtic survived a nervy second half as they held on to beat Rangers 2-1.

In the 23rd minute, Celtic took the lead when their captain Kelly Clark headed in from a corner, her second headed goal in as many games.

Celtic doubled their lead in the 41st minute. After Suzanne Mulvey was taken out by Rangers' keeper Claire Johnstone, Chloe Craig calmly converted the penalty.

And then in the 61st minute, Rangers pulled a goal back through their captain Clare Gemmell.

Celtic had the ball cleared off the line twice, but in the closing stages, Rangers pushed for the equaliser, however, Celtic held on to pick up a crucial win.

Aberdeen pick up crucial win

Aberdeen picked up a 3-0 win over Forfar Farmington to move closer to fifth place in the SWPL 1.

The away side opened the scoring in just the second minute through Cheryl Anderson, and then just three minutes later, it was 2-0. Aberdeen launched a long ball forward and Hannah Stewart managed to flick the ball into the net, ahead of the Forfar keeper Fiona McNicoll.

Their third and final goal came in the 72nd minute. Cheryl Anderson's shot was saved by McNicoll, but their defender Alana Bruce's clearance hit the keeper and bounced into the back of the net.
