Liverpool sealed a memorable 2-1 win over Arsenal yesterday in the WSL, and it was a performance that showed the Reds are more than capable of mixing it with the best teams in the division.
Caroline Weir scored a brilliant free-kick against her old side to seal all three points, after Shanice van de Sanden's magnificent first-half strike cancelled out Fara Williams' deflected opener for the Gunners.
Weir was at her fluent best as she added her fourth goal of the campaign at Meadow Park, in a performance where she was arguably the best player on the pitch. She had much to prove against her former team, and it showed in the quality of her display.
Confidence in the squad
Liverpool are in the process of bouncing back in women's football, as after achieving two straight WSL titles in 2013 and 2014, they finished second from bottom last season. They now sit comfortably in mid-table in the division, and stand a solid chance of potentially catching Birmingham and Arsenal ahead of them.
However Weir insisted that they can't afford to look too far into the future but gain confidence with every result they achieve; "we'll probably just take each game as it comes" said Weir, who added that she and the team are "confident in our own squad that we can get results against good teams."
Liverpool are currently on a very impressive run, remaining unbeaten for a period of seven games in all competitions, which includes results over some of the top teams in the WSL. However that was something that the Scottish forward played down a little at full time, "we've picked up good results against Arsenal and Man City but I don't think we'll look too far ahead."
It will therefore be crucial for Liverpool to kick on for the rest of the season, as they look to show that they can get back to the form they showed to lift two WSL titles a couple of years ago.
Tough place to come
Scott Rogers' players are on a brilliant run of their own, but they ended Arsenal's unbeaten streak at the weekend with their excellent win in Hertfordshire, a place where the Gunners hadn't lost since March after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea.
Weir was quick to recognise just how tough a fixture her old side is, and how good the result was, "It's a tough place to come so we're really happy with that" before saying "we're delighted with the win, it was a tough game and we're delighted to get three points."
For the Scottish international, scoring the winner against her former team mates must have been a very special feeling, but she was reluctant to take all the credit for herself from what was a very good team performance from the Merseyside club, "obviously I'm happy to get a goal but most importantly the three points for the team and we can go back to Liverpool happy."
Arsenal and Liverpool meet again in their final match of this season's WSL, where another cracking game can be expected in Cheshire. For Weir and co, they will be hoping that they can spring another impressive win as they look to improve on their current fifth position in the table and get back to old ways.
