Liverpool will travel to Derby County in the third round of the EFL Cup after the draw was made on Wednesday night.

The Reds booked their place in the next round with a 5-0 thrashing of Burton Albion, who coincidentally take on Derby in the Championship this Friday, thanks to goals from Divock Origi, Roberto Firmino, a Tom Naylor own goal and substitute Daniel Sturridge's second-half brace.

That win has rewarded them with another tie against a second-tier side, with Jürgen Klopp's men going to the iPro Stadium in the week commencing September 19.

It will be the first time the two clubs have met since December 2007, the same season the Rams were infamously relegated from the Premier League with just one win from 38 and only 11 points.

Derby, managed by former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson, sealed their place in the third round with a penalty shoot-out victory against League Two outfit Carlisle United

A total of 32 penalties were taken, with Derby eventually triumphing 14-13, beating even the 30 taken in Liverpool's then-record highest-scoring shootout win over Middlesbrough in September 2014.

That followed a 1-1 draw at the iPro in which visitors Carlisle scored a 95th-minute equaliser to force extra-time, having beaten fourth-tier side Grimsby Town 1-0 in the first round, also at home.

Liverpool have not met Derby in cup competition since 1977, and have not been on the losing end to them since March 1999 - winning five of their six clashes since then, including 6-0 and 4-0 league victories.

The East Midlands club currently six 16th in their league table after just one win from their first four games, and include former Reds Scott Carson and Tom Ince in their squad.

Also among their squad is self-confessed Liverpool fan Will Hughes, once heavily linked with the club. The midfielder excitedly tweeted: "YEEEEEESSSS" shortly after the draw was made.

The tie, which could be televised, will be played on September 20 or 21 - following on from a trip to Chelsea the previous Friday and ahead of a home encounter with Hull City on the Saturday.

The Reds will hope to put together a run similar to the one that took them to the final of the competition last term, then under its previous incarnation the Capital One Cup, although Klopp's team eventually finished as runners-up to Manchester City.
