Two of the Frauen-Bundesliga top four went head to head on Saturday afternoon, and there was no splitting Bayern Munich or SC Freiburg.

The hosts missed multiple chances in the first period to go ahead, but finally struck from the spot after Melanie Behringer thumped home.

However, the constant passing up of opportunities continued and they were made to pay when Hasret Kayikci headed home the equaliser.

First half of few chances

The match began with Bayern on top, and their profligacy was apparent from the get-go. Behringer spun her marker brilliantly and shot at the near post, although Laura Benkarth was on hand to make a crucial save. However, just two minutes later, she had to rely on her defence to clear Gina Lewandowski's header off the line.

What followed was a spell of lacklustre football that failed to provide anything other than knocks, niggles and needless fouls. It did give Freiburg time to breathe, though. Lewandowski and Viviane Miedema both failed to hit the target with two great chances just before half time, as the Bayern frustration grew.with great chances late on

Drama in the second period

The start of the second half picked up where the first left off, as Bayern came forward with real verve. They were rewarded when Sara Däbritz and Giulia Gwinn clashed in the area. It looked like a simple coming together but Riem Hussein pointed to the spot. Melanie Behringer, who else, stepped up and left Laura Benkarth with no chance.

Summer signing from VfL Wolfsburg, Verena Faißt took on a starring role afterwards and brought a solid save from the Freiburg stopper moments later. Benkarth then pulled off a superb stop from a sweetly struck Faißt free-kick, which many thought had crept into the bottom corner.

Carina Wenninger then missed the most glorious Bayern chance of the half, firing wide after a kind deflection put her through on goal. After that, a Miedema effort that skimmed the post aside, Freiburg pushed and pushed until they got what they had been gunning for. However, only after they had a strong penalty appeal waved away.

First, Carolin Schiewe's header provided the only test for Tinja-Riikka Korpela thus far, but Hasret Kayikci went a step further. Lena Petermann's introduction off the bench had changed the game, and her cross into the box was met perfectly by Kayicki. She had got the better of Wenninger, and bulleted past Korpela to level the scores.

Däbritz went close twice in the latter stages but Freiburg managed to hang on for a superb point. Not the opening Bayern would have been hoping for, yet they only has themselves to blame.
