Southampton centre-back, Jose Fonte has released a statement via social media to put to bed any rumours that he may be leaving the Saints.

The 32-year-old was linked to move away from St. Mary’s during the summer transfer window, to the fans' dismay. After a spectacular Euro 2016 performance with Portugal, it was looking likely.

Manchester United were one of the many clubs reported to be interested in the Southampton captain after his international displays.

Making it crystal clear to fans

The frustration was growing for manager, Claude Puel with the badly timed reports surrounding Fonte’s future at the club when the Frenchman had just taken charge.

But after the closure of the transfer window on Wednesday, Fonte posted a statement on social media, confirming his commitment to the club he has been with for the last six years of his career.

Fonte's statement read: "Once in the national team only national team interviews/talks are allowed hence my 'let's leave that for another time' when asked about questions regarding my own club situation.”

To “make it perfectly clear” to fans and everyone else on social media, the statement was made to reassure that he is a “Southampton player” and has been since 2010. His “blood, sweat and tears” goes into everything he does for the south coast side every time he pulls on the Saints' shirt and the captain’s armband.

Being “professional” means everything to the centre-back and he is “fully committed” to Southampton Football Club, as well as Portugal on international duty.

He concluded: "Thank you #wemarchon."

There have been no Premier League games this weekend due to the international break, and Fonte is currently away with Portugal as they are prepare to face Switzerland in their first Wold Cup Qualifier on Tuesday.

Fonte will then be expected to make the return to England for Southampton’s next league fixture, away to Arsenal on Saturday 10th September.
