Swansea City youngster Joe Rodon has signed a new three-year contract at the club.

The 18-year-old, local to the Swansea area, has penned a new deal at the club that will keep him at the Liberty Stadium until 2019.

The defender has made seven appearances this season for the Under-23 side, who currently sit top of Premier League 2, Division 2.

Who is Joe Rodon?

Rodon is a young centre-back, who was part of the club’s pre-season tour of America this off-season, where he made appearances against Charlotte Independence and Richmond Kickers.

The defender also recently made his debut for the Wales Under-21 side against Luxembourg last month.

He has been training with the first team squad since March, and was named in the squad for last season’s FA Cup tie against Oxford United.

Rodon has been a Swansea fan all of his life, and previously stated “I was a season ticket holder [at Swansea] and, like a lot of boys from the local area, would come to the games with my family.”

The Welshman has been in the Swansea academy since he played with the Under-9 side.

The quotes

Rodon was obviously delighted about the new deal, stating: “Swansea is my home town club - I have been here since I was eight, so this is a happy moment for me and my family.”

He also expressed his delight at being a local player, and having to come through the ranks at Swansea and now he is reaping the rewards.

He was also specific over his goals, saying that he wants to play more for the first team over the next few years, but “I know I can’t get carried away. I just have to take each game as it comes.”

Can he make the leap to the first team?

Rodon has impressed several fans playing for the youth sides, and many have been claiming for a while that he is due a chance in the first team.

He didn’t look out of place when playing for the first team in the pre-season tour in America.

Swansea’s defence has also looked shaky since the departure of Ashley Williams, with neither Jordi Amat or Federico Fernandez really stepping up. Mike van der Hoorn and Alfie Mawson are also at the club vying for a bigger role but there’s every chance Rodon could make the jump soon.
