Youngster Jesse Lingard, has backed Manchester United and England teammate Marcus Rashford for success on his return to the England senior side.

Can be a success

Rashford's meteoric rise has continued into the new campaign, having broken onto the scene halfway through the 2015/16 campaign, with United earning him his first England call-up and a place in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 side.

Former manager Sam Allardyce didn't pick him for the 1-0 win over Slovakia, and with four goals in nine matches Gareth Southgate has reinstated him to the senior side. Rashford has been tipped to start ahead of captain Wayne Rooney, and Lingard is backing his teammate to be successful in the matches with Malta and Slovenia.

"I haven't seen him fazed at all. He's got a love for the game and every day he's got a ball at his feet," Lingard told his pre-match press conference. "He's still young as well so I think things are coming together for him just right at the moment, and hopefully he can carry it on."

He added: "Over the months, he has matured a lot from making his debut to now. He's gained a lot of experience at international level and in the Premier League and other competitions."

Lingard continued: "He's coming along nicely now but we can't forget he's only young - he's still going to grow and he's still going to be get bigger. We'll have to wait and see what he does after that."

Getting back in the fold

It hasn't been a good start to the season for Rooney, with just one goal in the last 11 matches for both club and country. His performances has saw him dropped by Jose Mourinho and expected to be dropped by Southgate, and Lingard has said that he is expecting the striker to make a return to the fold.

"I think that really because [of what he's achieved] no one can say anything [bad] about him really," he said. "He's been a top professional on and off the field for us and we look up to him as well. He's determined to get back and hopefully he can do that."

Lingard concluded: "I think he's very determined [to win his place back]. Even though he hasn't been playing for the club, he's still supporting us and he's going to get back into the fold."

England will take on Malta in the 2018 World Cup qualifying at Wembley Stadium at Saturday, October 8 with kick-off at 5pm BST.
