Brøndby IF will be keen to maintain at least their 2-0 lead from the first leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League tie with SKN St. Pölten.

Brondby fairly comfortable in the first leg

The Danish side, who finished runners up in their own league last season, showed why they were considered favourites before this match-up.

There was never really any doubt about who would win the game, and the Danes got on the scoresheet in the 21st minute when Nicoline Sørensen calmly headed the ball past Isabella Kresche in the Austrian goal. The assist came courtesy of Katrine Veje.

Sørensen has had a great season, scoring seven times for her club in nine league games, and the 19-year-old Dane has been awarded with a call-up the National Team.

It was also Sørensen who got Brøndby's second goal, when central defender Simone Boye Sørensen had found her way up to the other end of the pitch and went past Kresche before she squared it for Sørensen, who could easily put it into the net. 2-0 ended up being the result, which gives the ‘Blågule’, as Brøndby are known as, an excellent advantage heading into the second leg.

Promise for St. Pölten

Reigning Austrian champions St. Pölten wasn’t completely without chances, as they had 11 attempts. Just one of these were on target, however. If they can improve that efficiency, they can give Brøndby a run for their money. The Austrian side are currently second in the league behind NÖSV Neulenbach, with two points less after five games.

When St. Pölten won the league two seasons ago they broke Neulenbach’s streak of winning the title 12 years in a row (2003-2014). Hungarian Fanny Vágó ended last season as topscorer in the Austrian league and is also currently the topscorer in the league with eight goals in five games. She is someone who, along with Rafinha and Viktoria Pinther, has to have a good day if they want to overturn the 2-0 deficit.

Both sides enjoying good starts domestically

Both teams got victories in their weekend games. St. Pölten earned a 4-0 win over bottom of the table side LUV Graz, while Brøndby also got a 4-0 win, when they beat Vejle. The goals in that game came from Mie Leth Jans, Boye, Louise Kristiansen and Nanna Christiansen. The latter has also been Brøndby's key player this season, and the midfielder has netted 13 goals.

Brøndby are undefeated in the Danish league and is currently in first place due to a better goal difference than Fortuna Hjørring. Fortuna are also the only team this season to have taken points off them, when the two teams played a thrilling 2-2 game. Other than Christiansen and Sørensen, Boye has been instrumental in defence, while Julie Trustrup has controlled the midfield.

Brøndby go into this second leg with a massive advantage. St. Pölten know they have to score three goals while keeping Brøndby at bay. This will not be an easy task as Brøndby have only once this season let in more than one goal, which was in the aforementioned match against Fortuna. In total they've only allowed the opposition to score four goals in nine matches.
