Glasgow City made Scottish footballing history as they secured the SWPL 1 title with a 3-1 win over Hibernian, their tenth title in a row.

In the tenth minute, City took the lead. Hayley Lauder flicked the ball past her marker in the box and then delivered a teasing ball across the six-yard box where Sarah Crilly was waiting at the far post to score – her seventh in the past four games.

In first half stoppage time, City scored their second goal. A free-kick was worked to Fiona Brown down the right and her cross picked out Savannah McCarthy at the far post whose header gave Jenna Fife no chance.

City made it 3-0 in the 64th minute when Lauder's shot smashed off the left post. But there was Clare Shine to pounce upon the rebound to smash the ball into the top corner.

Hibernian did pull a goal back in the 83rd minute. Siobhan Hunter tried her luck from 35 yards, however, it looked like Gemma Fay would make the save, but she didn't cleanly collect and fumbled the ball over the line.

Ten in a row

After the game, Head Coach Scott Booth reflected on the club’s achievement, saying, “I was saying to the players before the game, and just after the game in the dressing room, the amount of people that have been involved in ten in a row."

She added, "You take into account the people who work in the background, obviously Laura (Club Manager Laura Montgomery) and CAS (Chairperson Carol Anne Stewart) but other people who volunteer and help out and have done for a number of years. And then, players who have come and gone have also contributed to ten in a row, there’s a lot of people who have been involved in ten in a row. It’s very nice to be part of it.”

Going into the game, there was obviously pressure going into the match, but Booth commented of his players that, “I was really pleased with the ways the players have handled that this season. It was something that was always there, and they are the type of players who handle that sort of pressure really well.”

City started the game on the front foot, dominating Hibernian and Booth said he felt confident before the game, after speaking to his players and seeing that “they had a really good mindset and they wanted it – there was a hunger there, a desire".

Booth praised Hayley Lauder, saying that “she was really good, started the game really well.” But he also praised Jo Love and said, “It was one of those days where you needed a couple of players who took the game by the scruff of the neck.”
